The national zoo in Washington D.C.

This week brought a trip to the national zoo in Washington D.C.  The zoo is 163 acres in size, and it's official name is the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. It is home to around 2000 animals, you can check them out here . The day was overcast with little spits of rain. Katie got to see her favorite animal, elephants for the very first time. She was thrilled beyond belief! The zoo is about a  1 1/2 hour drive from us and has free admission. What a great little road trip!

Some days I swear to you this is what I see in the mirror! HA! ;)

Check out this lion, and he's rocking the 80's hair to boot!! Bret Michaels would be jealous, I am certain! Speaking of Bret Michaels I am fairly certain I saw him a few weeks ago. While driving down a road that us locals call "space highway" in front of me were two guys on motorcycles, one a distinctive yellow Harley with white and black taxi type paint. Hmmmm...I am pretty sure somewhere in a long ago Poison video, or photo I have seen this motorcycle. Well, whether it really was Bret, or just a Bret look-a-like--who knows? I wasn't about to make a fool of my rapidly approaching middle-age self by letting the teenage me take over and hang out the window screaming! Long hair whipping and a bandanna to boot, the rider on the yellow cycle along with his sidekick roared off toward the approaching sunset. I realize this sounds a little crazy, unless of course, you are a local and know that Bret Michaels grew up about 20 minutes from our farm. His parents still live in the same house, I hear he is a dutiful son and visits several times a year. While the grown up me certainly has different taste in men, and has long since left the fantasy of Bret Michaels behind, the teenage me still swoons! Ahhhh, the hair band days!

Awesome elephant sculpture

I believe this is right after she squealed!! Oh, and I forgot to mention, this is Jake, Katie's very sweet boyfriend--taking Katie to see elephants was his fantastic idea. What a cute couple:)

Toucan Sam, is that really you?!?!

There were enough animal exhibits to take up the whole day, of course if you were tired of animals you could always scoot on over to a little museum called the Smithsonian! Well anyway, just wanted to share a little sampling from the zoo. The link follows, and if you go make sure to say hi to the elephants from Katie:):)

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, was a turtle????? Huh?:):)
